Finished Orange Grove mural

Finished up the Orange Grove storefront mural at SJ’s International Food Market at 1108 Overcash Drive in Dunedin, Florida over Thanksgiving weekend. This area of town used to be part of a large orange grove back in the day. Dunedin is known as a very walkable and bike-able town, hence the nod to the  antique bike with market baskets. The town is also the spring training base for the Toronto Blue Jays. Since SJ’s IFM is family owned and operated, the Blue Jay are represented as a family of birds. The faux wood signs pointing around the corner to the patio with picnic benches and herb garden tie in to the recycled pallets used for the fresh herbs the store’s owner, Som, uses in her fresh Thai cuisine made to order and available for dining in or taking out. Find them on Facebook or @SJSINTERNATIONALMARKET.

65 painting hours went into laying down multiple primer layers for a thick, almost vinyl-like base, followed by the actual mural painting, then finished up with multiple layers of clear polyacrylic to protect the design from scratches and curious fingernails. Here are some highlights of the design, including the antique bicycle, faux wood signs and a Blue Jay family.

Don’t be a doormat

Disappointed that I have managed to get to 50 and still cannot remember this lesson when I need to. smh

Cherry Blossoms window

I painted the storefront windows at SomSom’s handmade boutique here in town. We did a pair of Sakura, or Japanese Cherry Blossom, trees and butterflies.

My Other Dog

Since I miss him so much when I don’t have him with me (since he’s not actually my dog), I decided my next piece was going to be one of Rico. This is a sneak peek at how he’s coming along. 🙂

Turkey on the window

Updated my neighbor’s storefront window by changing out the hobgoblin in the far corner to a turkey:

Being a country girl, yes, I do know what a real wild turkey looks like! But for a storefront window, greyish-black is really kind of boring 😀

Dances with Dogs

So, I just wanted to get a shot of my “tank top of the day” to share on our studio’s Facebook page and, of course, the boys were right there with me. My little bud Rico is jealous of Nemo, so whenever Nemo comes over and leans on me, Rico has to one-up him and take the high road to get to me! LOL

So I let the camera click away and herewith present to you ……. Dances with Dogs!

(I know I am a dog dork and my biggest fans are furry!!!)

Rico gets a promotion

Rico is a super cuddly pup who, whenever he is here, is most often glued to my side or under my feet chewing on toys, sticks, recyclables or whatever I’m eating, climbing up onto his chair beside my desk to either rest his head on my foot or leg or continue climbing up onto my lap because he wants something or to give me dog kisses, or he’s curled up next to me in bed at night. When he’s not in my sight, he can be found poking around the back yard eating the flower buds off the hibiscus plants, flushing the hens out from under a bush, or trying to tackle Nemo (that is, if Nemo has come out of the air conditioning long enough to do more than just tinkle). He’s a charming little fellow about whom I am as gaga over as I am over my own dog and not embarrassed to admit it.

Since Rico, a/k/a My Other Dog, has been the inspiration for several of our studio hashtag designs, it only seems fair to him that for his birthday, he receive a well-deserved promotion here at BigBlackDogStudio.

Presenting the new VP of our Graphic Design department …….. Rico.
